When it’s all too much

Just as we were emerging from the intense part of the pandemic, events in the past week have thrown the world into another spin. As we are each dealing with our life and its challenges as best we can, overwhelm can happen when a global situation emerges that has the potential to once again affect most every person on the planet in one way or another, and stress can go to another level.

When it all feels like too much, try shifting your energy from the macro view (how the world in general is doing) to a micro view (how myself and my circle of people is doing). Please know I am not advocating ignorance of global events, but when balance in our lives is lost and our well-being starts to suffer, it’s time to narrow our area of focus to that which we can control and more importantly, what determines the quality of our everyday lives.

The following are tactics you can use to strengthen or regain a sense of balance in your life. Some ideas may seem odd or even silly, but the point is to feel grounded in changing and challenging times and purposeful in the life you choose to lead.

Do a closet purge and donate to your favorite charity

Spring clean a room like a boss

Go for a hike, not just a walk

Do a full workout. Yes, all of it, even the cool down

Find and prepare a new healthy recipe

Listen to a guided meditation

Reach out to an old friend

Try a new flavor of tea (my new fave is Bengal Spice)

Repair something that’s been lying around broken for ages

Buy a new novel

Get to bed on time and follow the no-screen-time-for-one-hour rule prior (read the new book you just bought)

Clean your pantry and throw out old food

Drink more water

Listen to your favorite stand-up routine while you prep dinner

Revisit an old favorite hobby. Watercolor, anyone?

Plan a summer vegetable garden. No room? Try a vegetable tower or vertical garden

Groom your fur baby

Order and frame some new photos

Try a new restaurant for dinner

Create no-technology windows in your week (even just 2 hours is a great start)

If possible, invest in new comfy bed linens

Rest deeply

I invite you to choose and have fun with the ideas here that appeal to you or pique your interest. Learning to hear (and follow!) the nudges we sense from our heart is a practice that assists us in living a more authentic and joyful life, in any greater circumstance.
