Have you ever imagined what it would be like to have your grandparents or great grandparents join you for a day in your life? Just to ride with you in your car (Where is that voice coming from & how does she know you should turn left?) go to the grocery, watch your smart tv or hear the language or see the clothes on any given show? So much has changed in our world, from the geopolitical scene to the climate to personal technology.
It is vital to recognize that change is a fact of life. It always has been, but the rate of change we are dealing with today is breathtakingly rapid. It can be daunting to keep up with. Since slamming on the brakes is not an option here, the best course of action is to learn to ride the wave of change as adeptly as we can. The following ideas are meant to help you navigate our rapidly changing world in a more peaceful, centered state.
Go within. We put our well-being in peril when we peg our happiness or sense of security on the conditions of the outside, volatile world. Yet we each carry within us a spark of the Divine, our soul, or inner pilot light that keeps us centered regardless of outside circumstances. When we cultivate the connection with the peaceful, eternal part of ourselves, we develop a steadiness that provides a true sense of security, and leaves us feeling less stressed and vulnerable. Practices to go within include meditation, any stillness practice, being out in nature, journaling, yoga, or any activity that takes you out of the overactive thinking mind and leaves you feeling grounded and calm.
Keep an open mind. It is easy to see the headlines or hear the latest news story and jump to conclusions about what it means and how it will all unfold. If there’s anything the past few years have taught us it’s that we don’t know what’s going to happen. We might have ideas about future scenarios, but we simply do not know. Things that first appear awful may bring unexpected blessings or spur change that’s long overdue. Adopting an attitude of, “Hmm, we’ll see” is wiser than it may appear.
Look for the good. The truth is we see whatever it is we’re looking for. If we believe everyone is out to get us, or people can’t be trusted, that indeed, is what we will find. For your own sake, look for the good in yourself, in others, in life. While nothing is perfect there is much to be celebrated and appreciated. As a wise person once observed, the denominator of what’s right is always greater than the numerator of what’s wrong. When your intention is to find the good in any situation, you will, then watch your life change in amazing ways.
Understand our connection to the world and each other. If a veil could be lifted for us to be able to see how we all are connected to each other in a very real way, all talk of “us” and “them” would disappear. People who look or live differently than us would cease to be seen as wrong or weird. The same is true for the natural world around us. Currently we are paying the price of treating our planet as something ‘different’ and separate from us. Spiritual teachings state that whatever mean or vengeful thing we do to another, we do first to ourselves. Bring our connection to each other and the world around us into the light of your awareness. We’re all wearing the same jersey here – Team Life.
