Stop believing your thoughts.
If you drop in and actually listen to what your egoic mind is spewing out, you’ll quickly notice most of the thoughts are negative in nature. They are critical of others or yourself. They are regretting the past and fearing the future. Your mind can churn out scary scenarios like Dominos churns out pizza. Your ego knows just the right buttons to push to send you reeling into obsessive worrying thoughts.
If you are not aware of this dynamic, your whole being will be swept away in a sea of worry and anxiety, even when your real life, in this present moment, is just fine. An effective way to quit believing everything you think is to simply question your thoughts:
Do I know that for sure?
You can think of it this way. Imagine that your mind is a little 5 year old child, running up to you insisting that there is a giant monster in their closet that has special powers and is going to storm the house as soon as everyone is asleep.
Are you worried? Slightly concerned? Or do you just smile and assure the little one that all is well (and perform a closet inspection for their benefit). You’re not worried because you understand it’s just an active imagination run wild, and there is nothing real to fear.
In the same way, you can know that all those scary thoughts that produce feelings of anxiety and stress are the imaginings of your fear-based ego. When you stop believing them without questioning them, you create a more peaceful state in body, mind, and spirit.
