Do you remember playing hide and go seek or tag as a child? I do. I clearly remember playing in our backyard with my older cousins, running as fast as my little legs could carry me, like the hounds of hell were at my heels, bolting for the tree that was “base!”
Even though it was just a game and nothing truly bad would have happened if I were tagged, there was an immense relief that washed over me when I touched base. Ha! I was safe! No one could get me now.
What a feeling that was!
As an adult I have come to discover that there is a ‘base’ within each of us; A calm, still place where we are safe, where we are not vulnerable to the capriciousness of life, where we feel secure and comforted, and maybe even invincible?
The place I’m referring to is within you, too. It’s within each of us and is known by many different names – inner self, higher self, soul, pilot light, inner being, true self, and various others. Regardless of the word we attach to that inner sanctuary, it is always there within us, and is a great comfort, especially when Life feels overwhelming.
What exactly IS that place? I can’t say for sure, but I believe it is the part of us that is Divine. That piece of God that incarnated with us and no matter how far off track we feel our life has gotten, it is still there, unchanged and unchangeable; steady, peaceful, and so very, very, strong.
Perhaps you’re thinking, okay, that’s a lovely thought but how does one access this place? How do I get to this awesome space of safety and comfort?
We access our inner ‘base’ in stillness, when we drop out of our over-active thinking mind, and into the present moment, into our bodies, into Now. When we quiet our minds, when we slow and deepen our breathing, we begin to connect with this space within us. It is always there but we must practice accessing it.
Meditation is one means of connecting with our inner sanctuary, but it is not the only one. Some people experience it when they are surrounded by nature. Taking a walk through a forest and feeling the hum of life, observing the intelligence and resilience of life in all its forms is a beautiful way to get there. For some it might be running – being so totally in your body and the moment, you enter the zone where your mind disengages and you just are. Or for you maybe it’s caring for the small and innocent creatures of this world like tiny babies or animals; life in a simpler, purer form.
I invite you to experiment with different ways of accessing your inner ‘base,’ and make a habit of ‘going there’ on a regular basis, daily, if you can. When we touch that inner spark of Divine Energy, of God, of pure Love, we are indeed safe, and comforted and we experience the Love that is there for us and IS us.
