We are all familiar the adage about when one door closes, another one opens. This came to life for me in a very real way a few weeks ago. Actually, the story began last December…..
I’d been following a man named Lee Harris on YouTube for a while, when at the end of the energy update for December, he introduced his Impact the World seminar in Scottsdale, Arizona in April of ’20.
It seemed like the perfect boost for my business, as it was about helping creatives promote their work and also seemed like a fabulous chance to network. I. was. stoked. When something like that resonates with me, I don’t begin a long internal debate about it – I was already familiar with Harris’s work and who wouldn’t want to go to Scottsdale for a few days and uplevel their business acumen at the same time? Payment made.
You probably know what’s coming… On March 10 I received an email informing me that the Impact the World seminar had been postponed until late September because of the pandemic. When that door closed, while it wasn’t a huge surprise, it felt tremendously disappointing, and I did not take it particularly well. To be totally honest, I was angry. I had been so looking forward to that seminar, which at the time of the postponement was less than a month away. The door closed on a spring trip and great business opportunity.
I did not look in an open, expectant way for what might be next. I pounded at the closed door with my resistance to the news. That timing in the fall was not convenient, and there lurked the thought that with a fall resurgence of the virus, it might not happen at all.
Three months later, we were returning to Atlanta after a short beach trip when I opened my email to find a message from Lee whose subject line was, It is with a heavy heart…..
Yup. He announced the cancellation of the event due to continuing pandemic concerns, but this time, there was no frustration, no anger, and just a 1/4 tsp of disappointment. I told my husband, shrugging my shoulders, “Oh well, that’s ok.” Door closed and locked, but this time I didn’t resist it, and I believe that made all the difference.
ONE day later, I was interviewed on Business Talk Radio in a brief segment, which was a fun opportunity that had come up 2 weeks prior, and I was grateful for the chance. After it concluded, I happily went on to other work. Twenty minutes later I received a call from BTR offering me a chance to be on Jill Nicolini’s show for four 30 minute segments in July. The representative explained each show will be replayed 20 times throughout the year, for a whopping 100 shows of exposure! That door flew open and I hadn’t even seen it, nor was I looking for it, and the the Universe put a bow on it – it cost less than the seminar. Those two sums of money crossed in the digital plane and I ended up better off for it.
As you can see, I am still learning my lessons right along with you! I wanted to share this with you because nothing illustrates a point better than a recent, real-life experience.
When doors close for us, if we are in a space where it is possible, we benefit when we turn with acceptance to continue our journey, trusting is well, all will continue to be well and even better, with new possibilities waiting to bloom on our doorsteps.
