As we work to create the lives we desire, we often focus on one big thing – one eating plan that will help us reach our ideal weight, one dating app that will find us our person for life, one philosophy that will answer all of life’s questions.
However the ‘one big thing’ approach gives rise to an All or Nothing mentality. We’re either on it, or we fall off. It’s a big success or a huge failure. And when it comes to being a human, it’s really challenging to always hit the mark – to follow our plan unfailingly. When we inevitably slip up and veer from our plan, we often end up feeling really bad about ourselves and lose hope of being able to succeed with the things that matter most to us.
But the good news is, when it comes to creating the life you desire, it’s not so much about one big thing, but rather, dozens of little things you do each day that over time, create the circumstances of your life. Let’s go back to that eating plan that will solve your health and body image issues. It’s true that what we eat has a huge impact our health, but so do other little things like –
- Waking up with a smile
- Drinking water
- Smiling at most everyone you meet
- Managing your time wisely
- Getting physical activity each day
- Getting some exercise most days
- Looking for the good in yourself and others
- Cultivating gratitude
- Speaking kindly to yourself
- Getting plenty of sleep
- Being out in nature
- Journaling
- Limiting screen time
- Accepting help when needed
- Practicing tolerance, knowing yours isn’t the only perspective
- Being discerning about what you watch and who you hang out with
- Developing awareness of your thoughts and thought patterns
Why is this good news? Because it allows for us to be human and still make progress! We can slip up here and there, but nail several other choices that do impact the quality of our lives.
