Ground Yourself

These are chaotic times. Watching the news today can leave you reaching for the stress gummies (or ice cream, or alcohol). The state of the world can feel overwhelming, and it can seem like we are powerless, but we are not. In this blog I’d like to share with you ways to ground yourself; practices to help you feel more resilient and capable of managing your mood, mindset, and choices.

To feel more grounded and less vulnerable to the chaos in the world, try these strategies:

Limit screen time. This one is key. It’s impossible to experience moments of peace if we’re perpetually checking in to see what’s new (in the last 20 minutes). But there is such a thing as being too informed. We can be aware of what’s going on in the world, without following every nuance in developments, especially if there is nothing for us to do differently in our lives.  Decide on an interval that you think you can be consistent with – every three hours? Better yet, twice a day for 15 minutes each? Then stick with that plan and notice how your stress level decreases.

Social media can keep us informed and connected, but it can also drive us bonkers.

Move your body. So many of us spend way too much time sitting and thinking, and not enough time moving. Take a walk. Rake leaves. Vacuum. Stretch. Dance. Play pickleball. When we get out of our heads and into our bodies, our stress levels plummet and we reconnect with ourselves in healthy and fun ways.

Do things that bring you joy. My oldest daughter is an attorney, and rediscovered painting with watercolors a few years ago, and over that time, her painting has grown in complexity and quality. Her life can be quite stressful, and painting is her relaxation. She just sits at her kitchen table, (no fancy studio) and enjoys creating. What do you enjoy? Gardening? Baking? Playing an instrument? Sports? Balance out stress with giving yourself permission to do what you love.

Recognize your role in the grand scheme of things. When we work ourselves up into indigestion and high blood pressure, nothing has improved because of it. The world is not one tiny bit better for the pain we have brought on ourselves. Indeed, if we want to help the state of the world, the very best thing we can do is to manage our mindset, and live a conscious, authentic, and meaningful life. That not only grounds us and helps us enjoy more vibrant mental health, but it contributes to the health of the collective.
