Less Thinking, More Peace

You’re probably familiar with the famous quote from the French philosopher, René Descartes, who declared, “I think, therefore I am.” With those five words, he was assuring himself of his own existence. A much more accurate statement today would be – I think, therefore I am……stressed.

Here’s the thing – if your very active thinking mind is allowed to run unobserved or unquestioned, you are not merely proving your existence, you’re likely creating unnecessary stress and anxiety for yourself.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against the human mind. It is an incredible tool that is capable of great things, but it’s also really good at kicking up trouble, imagining worst case scenarios and churning out thoughts that keep your stress hormones flowing and your being in an almost constant state of fight, flight, or freeze.

No bueno, as they say.

So what’s a human supposed to do? Not think? Actually yes, as much as possible. When you are chopping veggies, walking your dog, vacuuming, or out for a jog, just be. Tune into your physical sensations. Note the temperature of the air, the ambient sounds, your physical body (do you have good posture?). Be in the moment without having a commentary about it.  With practice, you can create little oases of non-thinking peaceful moments, that do so much good for your body, mind, and spirit.

When you are thinking, be aware of the nature of your thoughts. If they are helpful and productive, great! However if they slip into the anxiety-producing realm, check them. Pause, breathe, and know in that moment that you do not have to believe that thought and are absolutely capable of choosing a more positive thought. Or not thinking at all.
