Happy 2023! There’s nothing quite like the excitement and sense of possibility that a new year brings. Yet, is it really new? More specifically, do we let it be new?
As you turn your attention to the new year and what you wish for it to be, it is an important question to pose to yourself. As humans, we have a habit of bringing the past with us, superimposing it on the future, and end up creating the same circumstances over and over again.
While it is intelligent to learn lessons as we go and try not to repeat the same mistakes, if taken too far, that practice keeps us stuck in life, unable to move forward in meaningful ways and create new and fulfilling experiences for ourselves.
For example, just because a dating app did not yield any hopeful relationships doesn’t not mean another one won’t in the future, or that dating in general is hopeless. If efforts to quit smoking haven’t worked yet, that doesn’t indicate that the method that will enable you to quit for good isn’t just around the corner.
It’s tempting to haul our past experiences with us and lay them over the future. It feels smart to protect ourselves from possible bad outcomes. Yet in that defensive stance, you shut out the new; the likelihood that things are working out beautifully for you, and that the thing your heart desires will unfold for you in the coming year.
So as we head into 2023, let it truly be a new year. Let ideas, attitudes, people and adventures bring a freshness to your life. Let the woes of the past stay in the past. Trust yourself that you’ve learned what was needed, and boldly step into the new year, embracing Life as it presents itself in each sparkling present moment.
