How do you feel when you really come through for a friend or family member? When you show up and help them in a meaningful way and they are deeply grateful? It’s a good feeling to know you’ve made a real difference for someone else.
But what about you? Do you ever show up for yourself?
Wait, what does it even mean to show up for yourself?
It’s simple. You show up for yourself when you follow through with your goals and priorities; when you take care to honor your well-being and aspirations in a way that increases your quality of life.
Here are a few examples to add some clarity. You show up for yourself when you –
- Stick to the budget you created for yourself the whole month
- Take the time to attend your favorite exercise or art class
- Speak to yourself with kindness instead of harsh criticism
- Steer clear of too much alcohol, smoking, or ordering DoorDash at 10pm
- When you tell the truth when lying would have been easier
- When you give that little extra effort that makes all the difference
- When you do what you told yourself you would
- When you resist junk food and make a healthier choice
- When you wake up on time and go to bed on time
These actions may seem simple, perhaps hardly worth celebrating, but you make thousands of choices each day, and many times your health, goals, and priorities take a back seat to poor time management or pleasing other people.
The truth is, as good as it feels to show up for someone else (and that’s an awesome thing to do!) it’s even more gratifying to show up for yourself! It’s an incredible feeling when you put in the time and effort to accomplish the things you value, the things that make your heart smile, and feel genuinely proud of yourself.
I invite you this month, to look for opportunities to show up for yourself. Give yourself the gift of that nothing-compares-to feeling of living your best life.
