Tell a Better Story

Garrison Keillor. Roald Dahl. Maya Angelou. William Shakespeare. John Lennon. You.

What do you have in common with this list of extraordinary people? Each is a story teller: A person who weaves a narrative in a compelling way. It may or may not be true, but it is captivating either way.

The difference between you and the others listed above is that your story telling is mostly just in your mind and is not shared with others, or certainly the general public. However, it is equally as captivating, and your subconscious is listening to, hanging on, your every word.

What kind of story do you tell and why does it matter?

Do you tell a story like any of these?

– I just don’t have what it takes to be really successful.

– I’m too old to begin a new course of study.

– I don’t have enough self-discipline to get in shape.

– I’ll never be able to travel like I really want to.

– I’ve never been very coordinated.

– I suck at relationships.

Do any of these stories sound familiar to you? If so, don’t feel bad and don’t berate yourself. It’s enough simply to become aware of that narrative in your mind. Even if it’s gone on for years, it can be changed. More on that in a moment.

But why does it matter? What difference does the story you tell yourself make? The truth is it is hugely impactful in your life. Your subconscious is always listening to the words you think to yourself, takes them as directives, and immediately sets about following those “orders.” Our story, over time, becomes our reality. We speak it into being. If we are not aware of this phenomena, it can shrink our quality of life tremendously, however with some awareness and a different story, our lives can change for the better – often in dramatic and amazing ways!

If you want a better life, tell a better story.

It’s simple really and can look something like this:

– I am capable of great things.

– I’ve gotten through tough times and have learned so many lessons.

– I don’t have to be perfect to make progress.

– I am not a failure if I change my mind and do something else.

– I love my unique life journey, it’s always unfolding to more.

– I deserve the life I desire.

– I am guided by Source/God/Universe to my next best step.

– There are so many resources to help me achieve what I want.

– I am so blessed.

Do you see how these empowering stories open up new possibilities for you and create a different trajectory for your life?

It may seem too simple, too naive to be true, but it is. The stories you tell yourself have a huge influence on your life experience. Want a better life? Tell a better story. Here, I’ll get you started: Once upon a time, there was this fabulous and amazing person …..
