When you can’t think your way out of a problem

Managing Your Mind: A Key Skill for a Peaceful Life

One of the more useful skills to navigate this life is the ability to manage our mind. It’s the source of many wonderful and creative ideas, but also much unnecessary suffering.

Calming Your Mind

Whether the issue that is bothering you is a current, real situation or something of your own imagination, it is extremely helpful to be able to calm your mind down so that you can function in your life and experience more peace.

We often try to think our way out of the troubling situation, but if we’re agitated and upset, chances are that will not be productive. It’s easy to get stuck in a loop of stressful thoughts. A better ideas is to use your body to calm your mind.

The Body-Mind-Spirit Connection

The truth is we each are body, mind, and spirit. All parts are intimately and intricately connected. What we do to help one, helps the other and you can use that dynamic to calm your mind. When you are feeling upset, get out of your head and into your body.

  • Go for a walk, run, bike ride, or swim.
  • Do some yoga or pilates.
  • Do something that requires real physical effort.
  • Lift some weights or do a HIIT workout.

The physical exertion provides a reset. After a good workout you may suddenly have clarity about the issue that you just couldn’t see before, or maybe it just doesn’t seem as problematic as it had.

A Win-Win Solution

This is the best kind of win/win. Your body gets some health-giving exercise, your mind gets a break from overthinking, and you feel more peaceful and clear-minded as a result.
