At the time of this writing, a google search for “inner work” yields 586 million results. It’s trending. On social media there is much talk about the importance of doing inner work, but what does that really mean? How do you do it? What are the benefits of doing inner work?
I will answer those questions to the best of my abilities – drawn from over a decade of studying, taking classes, coaching, and um…… doing inner work.
What is inner work?
Our 5 senses are all directed outward, designed to inform us of the world around us. They are captivating and mesmerizing, so much so that many of us don’t bother turning inward, and only do so after suffering a trauma or loss. Essentially inner work means sitting in stillness and directing your attention within your own body and within your own mind; to become aware of your feelings, sensations, emotions as they are in the moment. It is the simple yet powerful step of noticing.
Does this seem too simple? Where does the “work” aspect come in? The work is in the noticing. Inner work doesn’t mean we try to wrangle “better” thoughts or emotions out of ourselves or beat into submission the elements of our personality that we deem unacceptable. It is simply to notice, and make a habit of noticing. From there, much understanding, compassion, guidance, creativity and peace come forth.
How do you do inner work?
To begin inner work create a time and space for yourself to sit without distraction. Set a timer for 3 – 5 minutes and make yourself comfortable, with a straight spine. Have your legs however feels best to you and rest your hands in your lap. Close your eyes and breathe. Gently slow and deepen your breathing. Direct your attention within your body. Feel your heart beating and any sensations of tension or pain in your body and just notice.
It may seem silly or even trite, but the simple act of sitting in silence and noticing what is going on within you, is an extremely powerful practice. And just like any physical workout, benefits are not seen after 1 or even 5 sessions, but over time it will bring many benefits that you, and the people around you will certainly notice.
A cautionary note: Sometimes when one has never done this process before, upsetting thoughts and scary emotions can come up. Not to worry. Know that there is nothing wrong with you, that this is merely the egoic mind thrashing about, like a 2 year old who doesn’t want her turn to end.
What are the benefits?
Inner work brings a break from the chaotic, chattering mind. A pause. A respite from incessant thinking in which inner wisdom and intuition can be accessed. If you’ve never really felt like you received guidance before, this practice will change that. Answers to questions become apparent. You’ll likely notice a lessening of reactivity. Little things aren’t upsetting as they used to be, and bigger things are processed with more peace and equanimity. Self-acceptance increases, and in short, it’s more fun to be you.
So we can forget the hardhat and sledgehammer and instead pull up a comfy pillow and begin or continue inner work. The benefits are vast and far-reaching.
