The Most Basic Question

Any person who is consciously walking the path of awakening has asked some deep questions along the way:

Do I have a destiny?

How do I manifest what I want?

How do I know when I am being guided?

and many other intriguing queries as well. Yet the question at the foundation of it all, and the one whose answer drives our daily attitude and choices is this:

Do I trust Life?

Whether we realize it or not, we have already answered that question in our minds. If we do not trust Life, our guard is continually up. There is a sense of constriction in our being, a reluctance to be at peace with what is. We approach our day almost like a tennis player ready to receive a serve: Crouched low, mentally swaying side to side, ready to put out fires, take offense, and react to whatever comes our way. It’s a defensive stance to be sure. Because we lack faith in the the goodness and benevolence of Life, we take it upon ourselves to make sure “things go the way they’re supposed to.” A heavy burden indeed.

If we trust Life however, we are able to live in a more relaxed state. We don’t sense that the weight of determining how things are supposed to go rests upon our shoulders. This is not to say we become complacent and lazy, just sitting on our sofas waiting to see what shows up for us, but rather that our inner state is one of peace. We absolutely have goals and dreams for our lives and take action steps to move toward them, but without attachment to them working out in a certain way. We are open to the possibility that Life holds something even better for us.

If we trust Life, we go within and sit in stillness regularly. We connect with our own inner guidance and proceed from there. We trust Life will bring us the inspiration, connections, and resources to manifest what our hearts are longing for. The paths we choose to pursue come from a place of curiosity and joy in exploration rather than dogged determination to make this one particular thing a success.

The question of whether we trust Life or not is played out quite vividly when unexpected things appear in our lives, like the loss of a job, relationship, or a sickness that we did not see coming; the things that really knock us back a few paces. Lacking trust, it’s easy to become bitter and angry, believing this should not have happened. We are filled with resistance and not open to seeing the lessons or blessings in the unwanted developments, adding layers of negativity to an already challenging situation.

Yet trusting Life doesn’t mean we leap for joy and skip around the room when those jarring events take place, but we do not resist them. We are open to the blessings and lessons that lie within, knowing they are there. Our energy then is available to respond in meaningful, helpful ways.

Our current society is one that leans toward not trusting Life. In the highly individualistic western culture, this level of trust is seen as far too passive. We’ve been raised to take the bull by the horns, to wrestle and cajole Life to the mat to get what we want.

My intention here is to simply say there’s another way. There’s another lens through which we see Life and our role in it. If you find yourself in the not trusting camp, don’t judge or criticize yourself because the lack of trust is ubiquitous, but please know that it can be developed.

I will leave you with one of my favorite mantras from Louise Hay, who knew more than a little hardship in her life, and it’s repetition serves to create that foundational belief that Life is indeed trustworthy.

I trust Life to unfold for my highest good.
